Edgar Alan Po, čuveni američki pisac, u mladosti je služio kao vojnik, a književnu karijeru započeo je stihovima po ugledu na Bajrona. Uskoro se opredelio za prozu, odabravši kao svoj žanr melodramu sa elementima horora, prva koja je postigla uspeh bila je Pad kuće Ašer. Postavši glavni urednik časopisa Mesindžer ojačao je svoj uticaj na književnoj sceni. Biografija koju piše Piter Akrojd počinje tokom šest poslednjih dana Poovog života. Niko ne zna šta se dogodilo od momenta kada su ga prijatelji ispratili na parobrod u Baltimoru do smrti šest dana kasnije u jednoj lokalnoj kafani. Sjaj genija i ugled pisca vizionara mešao se sa ponorima siromaštva, alkoholizma i gubitaka najdražih osoba koje je odnosila tuberkuloza.Svojim književnim delom Edgar Alan Po predstavlja preteču moderne fantastike, psihološke drame i detektivske priče. Pesnik Tenison rekao je za njega da je “predstavljao najoriginalniji um Amerike”.Biografija Pitera Akrojda stavlja akcenat na Poovo gotovo tragično detinjstvo, sa majkom putujućom glumicom koja je rano preminula, tvrdeći da je nesrećni pisac pronašao svoju porodicu u književnosti, ne toliko svoga doba koliko one koja će tek biti napisana u dvadesetom veku, vraćajući stalno pogled na delo pisca kome savremenici nisu odali zaslužano priznanje koje.
