Dei sei romanzi di Jane Austen, scrittrice che Virginia Woolf ha definito "l'artista più perfetta tra le donne", Orgoglio e pregiudizio è il primo in ordine di tempo e insieme il capolavoro. Quando lo scrisse, la Austen aveva ventun anni e un'amica di famiglia l'aveva definita "la più graziosa, sciocca, leziosa farfalla in cerca di marito che sia dato incontrare". Frivola e ironica, non si distingueva dal mondo campagnolo e borghese cui apparteneva, fatto di tè, balli flirt e della buona società, minuti e ridicoli incidenti della vita quotidiana. Ma su questi tenui motivi sapeva giocare con una grazia e una profondità uniche. Ed è così che, narrando in Orgoglio e pregiudizio la storia delle cinque sorelle Bennet e dei loro corteggiatori, riesce a evocare, con tocchi sobri e precisi, l'intero, incantevole, penetrante quadro della provincia inglese alla fine del Settecento.
