Pubblicato nel 1937 negli Stati Uniti, apparso un anno dopo in Italia nella celebre traduzione di Cesare Pavese, Uomini e topi è un piccolo intenso dramma che colloca l'amara vicenda dei suoi protagonisti su uno sfondo di denuncia sociale. Il romanzo affronta in chiave simbolica il problema dell'emigrazione contadina all'Ovest, terra di mancate promesse negli anni successivi alla Depressione: è la storia tragica e violenta di due braccianti che trovano lavoro in un ranch della California, il grande Lennie, gigante buono e irresponsabile, e il saggio George, guida e sostegno dell'amico nella vana resistenza alla difesa del mondo. Sfruttamento e lotte sociali, ingiustizia e sofferenza umana, tutti temi che verranno trattati con realismo aspro e risentito in Furore, sono qui espressi con una vena di lirica commozione e con quel vigore narrativo che fa di Steinbeck uno dei grandi autori americani.
